Art Sandbox

Art Sandbox

The Art sandbox is located in SLEA5 and curated by Regi Yifu.

To support Arts and the Artists making it, Linden Lab has included a region at SLEA to be used as Art Sandbox.
This is a unique opportunity for the artistic residents to create, play, and experiment with the tools of Second Life. It is also a place to meet fellow artists to share, discuss – and learn.
Your creations can be left on display until the next clean-up happens (see below).

At the Landing point of the Art Sandbox visitors can join the Sandbox group, receive rules and policies, or learn more about Second Life Endowment for The Arts.

Building Areas

For building, there are a ground area, a platform area at 200 meters, and one on 1500 meters for larger builds. Feel free to rez your own platform in the sky, it is available for rezzing.

The SLEA Art Sandbox Group

The group is open to the public, so anyone can join. Just search for “SLEA Art Sandbox” to find the group, or use the group joiner at the landing point.

Group members can create or enter objects in all building areas of the Sandbox, and also run scripts. Scripting is turned off for non-group Residents.

There is no standard object auto-return setting in the Sandbox. In order to give everyone a chance to participate, all Sandbox objects will be returned every Friday at 10am SLT. Please make sure you save your builds. If you’d like to keep your objects in the SLEA Art Sandbox a little bit longer, contact the Sandbox Curator to see what is possible.

If you have questions about your builds or about the SLEA Art Sandbox, then feel free to contact us.

SLEA Art Sandbox Guidelines and Policy

By Joining SLEA Art Sandbox, you agree to the SLEA Code of Conduct and the following Sandbox Rules:

The rules are the same as every other sandbox run by Linden Lab:

  • NO SELLING
  • NO ADVERTISING
  • NO GAMBLING
  • NO COMBAT
  • NO GRIEFING

These are non-negotiable, per Linden Lab.

There are additional SLEA Art Sandbox rules:

Don’t overhang your builds. Builds in Second Life can extend beyond their rez point into other parcels and even other simulators. The simulators which adjoin the SLEA Art Sandbox are, themselves works of art by artists-in-residence. Please respect their efforts and do not rez objects which overhang into the next simulator. The sandbox has an 8-meter boundary parcel on its edge to help prevent physical objects from leaving the sim, but this is not always foolproof.

Don’t overhang your scripts. Scripted objects that cause prim updates should be 10 meters away from the border with neighboring regions. This is because neighboring sims must keep up with the prim updates, causing them to lag. Such scripts would include color, texture, light, flexi, and shape changes, as well as updates to hover text or relinking or moving objects or child prims. This means that most interesting scripts will need to be considered. If in doubt, ask an administrator.

Don’t grief. What does this mean? Don’t engage in behavior that is disrespectful to others or the resource. This could be rezzing particle bombs or it could mean just standing around making gesture noise or over sized competition building. If you’ve been warned off of some disrespectful behavior and you continue with it, then you’re probably griefing, and the other person would be justified in filing an Abuse Report against you.

Abuse Reports. Users of the sandbox are encouraged to try to communicate with others about whatever problems arise. Remember that sandboxes are for experimentation, and sometimes experiments go awry, so therefore it is important to give other users some degree of latitude regarding their builds or artistic content. However, it is also important that abusive behavior be reported in an Abuse Report.

Behavior Versus Content. Just to reiterate: Content should be tolerated, unless it clearly violates ToS or CS. Abusive behavior should be understood for what it is: Abuse.

Pop-Up Events in the Sandbox

We allow people to have an art pop-up event in the Art Sandbox. If you would like to build a venue and have a art pop-up party in the sandbox please fill out the form below and we will contact you to schedule a time.
Art pop-up parties that are general in nature can have notices posted in the SLEA Main Group.
However, while it is ok to create a venue and have a random Rezday, Birthday, Anniversaries, and/or parties specific to one person or person’s, those parties will not be allowed to post a notice in the main group. SLEA’s Main group is for ART SPECIFIC EVENTS. TIP JARS can only be rezzed for performers like DJ’s, & Host.

Art Sandbox Pop-up Event Grant Application

Please read the following carefully before you apply.

SLEA is unique in that we are the only Linden Lab backed and granted galleries and art venues in Second Life. The artistic spaces here are granted to qualifying individuals who would like to participate in promoting the arts through the resident artists here in Second Life. Keeping this in mind, you will need to have an understanding that this space is granted to you and it is intended that you use your time here to promote your work, your galleries, and your venues. You must follow the Linden Labs’ TOS.

NOTICE:

Please check the SLEA Calendar before you plan an event. Let us know at least one week in advance when you would like to have your event so your liaison can add it to the calendar.
